One of the oldest ciphers that I've read about was what is called the "Caesar Shift" cipher. In this cipher, each letter is replaced by the one a fixed distance away, say 2 characters. So, by way of example, "ABC" would then become "CEF". Julius Ceasar is credited for creating this cipher and thus it bears his name.

I have taken this very simple cipher and have extended it so that you can put in the number of characters to shift, the types of characters to shift, etc. Enjoy!
